A&VS 276 - Service Dog Training
The beginning Service Dog Training course at WVU is open to any major and is offered during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. During this course, students will learn about the need for service dogs, the basic principles behind training techniques, different disabilities, and canine health care in lecture. Many guest speakers will attend, discussing issues such as the ethical treatment of persons with disabilties, veterinary care, and behavior analysis. In the laboratory session, students will apply what they have learned in lecture by training one of the Hearts of Gold Service Dogs basic tasks, such as SIT and STAY, as well as more advanced tasks, such as GET IT and LIGHT. Students will generalize their training experience on field trips to Target, PetCO, and the Morgantown Mall.
Exceptional students may be further involved in training the dog for placement (if applicable). Many past students have remained active in training and have assisted with the development of the program by staying involved.

A&VS 293 N - Intermediate Service Dog Training
Intermediate course sudents focus on the research aspect of training. Students will read research publications in behavior analysis and be able to apply these research finding to training service dogs. Students will conduct their own case study or experimental research study examining training methods and/or the effects of the human-animal bond. The principles used in training service dogs will be expanded as applicable to other animals, including humans.
Labs will be conducted depending on events during that semester. For example, students may be working with Stepping Stones campers, the prison system, or nursing homes. The students will conduct the required amount of training on their own time - labs will be dedicated to research projects.
